Events of the Week: We had
our 3rd quarter read-a-thon today. The students who turned in their
reading log enjoyed going to different classrooms to read. We also finished up
all third quarter assessments this week.
Math: We practiced composition and decomposition with number stories to
10. On some of our math pages, we leave a problem or two so that you and your
child can work these together at home.
Language
Workshop: Our theme was weather. We spent the week learning about
different types of weather. Each day we focused on a different type of
weather. We read various informational
books as well as fiction books about weather. We created a weather words poster
to use in our writing.
Writing
Workshop: We wrote an opinion piece about our favorite kind of weather and
spent time writing in our journals. Our opinion writing is hanging in the
hallway for you to see during conferences.
Reading
Workshop: While working with students in our reading groups, I am noticing that
students are struggling when they get to an unknown word. We are working
hard on trying out the different reading strategies. Many students are
having a hard time with saying the letter sounds and then blending the sounds
together. When reading with your child at home, PLEASE do not simply tell
your child a work he or she is stuck on. Instead, ask them what strategy they
could use. This will help them become independent readers.
Word Study: We focused on the -ag and -ap word families.
Students participated in various activities where they had to identify a
picture and match it to the correct word. We also practiced building words that
have the -ag and the -ap endings (bag, nap, rag, etc.).
