Friday Note - 4/27/18

Events of the Week:

  • Math: We have started learning to compose and decompose numbers 11 to 19 into sets of tens and leftover ones.  We are also writing the number sentence to match (example: 10 + 8 = 18). IXL is a great way to practice at home.

  • Language Workshop: This week we continued our Author Study on Laura Numeroff.  We read several “If you give books”. The students enjoyed hearing about the cat, dog, pig, and moose. We identified the characters and setting in each of the books and compared the stories.  We are putting a packet together that includes our response pages from this author study.

  • Writing Workshop: We continued series of events writing.  We wrote about the If You Give a Cat a Cupcake book.  We also completed our first series of events writing assessment by writing about our morning routine.

  • Reading Workshop: We are continuing to work every day on applying the reading strategies to figure out unknown words in our books.  I am excited about the progress the girls and boys have made so far this year.  I will be assessing end-of-year reading levels beginning next week.  Please encourage your child to use the reading strategies when he/she is reading with you at home.

  • Word Study: Our sight words for the week were “no” and “so”. We spent the beginning of the week reviewing building and spelling simple words.  We completed the assessments this week also.  Be sure to look over these assessments and continue to work on these skills at home.  If your child does not know all of his/her letter sounds, please be practicing daily with them.

Thursday Note - 4/19/18

No School Tomorrow or Monday!

Events of the Week: This week we started an Author Study on Laura Numeroff.

  • Language Workshop: We learned about Laura Numeroff and read several of her books, including If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, If You Give a Dog a Donut, and If You Take a Mouse to School.  We identified the characters, setting, and story events.  We practiced retelling the stories and sequencing the events.  We compared the books from the week to see how they were alike and how they were different.

  • Writing Workshop: We introduced series of events writing.  We spent the week putting events in the correct sequence and then writing about each event.  We discussed that in order for our writing to make sense, it has to be written in the correct order.  We practiced this by writing a whole group paper sequencing the events of eating cake at a birthday party.  Then the students independently wrote about a girl getting ready to go out in the rain.  Please look at this paper with your child and have him/her read it to you.

  • Reading Workshop: We are continuing to work every day on applying the reading strategies to figure out unknown words in our books. I am excited about the progress the girls and boys have made so far this year.  I will be assessing end-of-year reading levels in the next couple of weeks.  Please encourage your child to use the reading strategies when he/she is reading with you at home.

  • Word Study: Our sight word for the week was “what”.  We are working on building and spelling simple words.  We’ve worked extensively on changing the beginning sound to make new words (for example: pig, dig, wig) and now we are working on changing the middle (pat, pit, pot) and ending sounds (hot, hop, hog) to make new words.  Please use the construction paper letters that were sent home this week to practice this skill with your child.

  • Math: We have continued to work on counting objects to 20.  We are grouping them into sets of 10 and leftover ones.  We have done this both with ten-frames and without.  Your child’s numbers to 20 assessment is coming home today.  If your child cannot identify all the numbers to 20, please continue to practice at home.

Friday Note - 4/13/18

Events of the Week:

Math: We worked on counting objects to 20.  We grouped them into sets of 10 and leftover ones.  We are counting in two ways right now--the traditional way of counting (for example:  16) and the “say 10” way (ten six).  This may seem confusing at first, but this is a great way for students to learn about the tricky teen numbers--to see that the number 16 is a set of 10 and 6 ones.

Language Workshop: This week we learned about animals.  We talked about how plants, animals, and humans are alike and different (needs, habitats, etc.).  We discussed how plants, animals, and humans can change the environment to meet their needs.  We talked about various animal parents and their babies and discussed ways in which animal parents care for their young- just like our mommies and daddies care for us!

Writing Workshop:  This week we wrote in our journals about how plants, animals, and humans are the same and different.  We also focused on comparison writing.  Each child chose an animal and drew two pictures—one of the parent and one of the baby.  Then they wrote sentences about the similarities and differences between the animal parent and baby.

Reading Workshop:  We are continuing to work every day on applying the reading strategies to figure out unknown words in our books.  I am excited about the progress the girls and boys have made so far this year.  Please encourage your child to use the reading strategies when he/she is reading with you at home.

Word Study:  Our sight word was “this”. We also worked with the -ip, -ill, and -ig word families. We are learning to make new words by changing the beginning sound.  Next week, we will begin changing the middle and ending sounds also to make new words.

Friday Note - 4/6/18

Events of the Week: We enjoyed a presentation by Delta Dental about taking care of our teeth on Wednesday.

Math: We worked on making 10 this week with different number pairs. We used a ten frame and counters to see how many more were needed to make 10. We also worked on writing number sentences to match the ten frame. We completed assessments on writing number sentences for ten and fluently subtracting within 5. Be sure to look over these assessments and continue working with your child at home.  We started unit 5 which focuses on the teen numbers and counting to 100.

Language Workshop: We read several fiction and nonfiction plant books.  We made our own plant artwork and labeled their parts and needs.  We planted flowers and vegetables in our classroom to watch them grow over the next few weeks.

Writing Workshop: We completed an informative writing piece about plants to hang in the hallway with our plant artwork.  Continue encouraging your child to write at home!

Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.

Word Study:  Our sight word was “for”. We also worked with the -ut, -un, and -ug word families. We are learning to make new words by changing the beginning sound.

BOOK FAIR!  Our class will go to the Buy One - Get One Free Book Fair on Monday during our library time.  If you would like your child to purchase books, please send money in an envelope or baggie.  Write his/her name and "book fair" on the outside.  This is a great opportunity to stock up on books for summer reading!!

Tomorrow is Spring Picture Day!

All students will have their picture taken tomorrow.  When the pictures come back, they will be sent home to parents.  Then you will be able to look at the pictures and decide if you would like to purchase them.  If you do not wish to purchase them, then you can return the picture package to school.

We will also be taking our class picture tomorrow.  You will be able to purchase one of those when they come in as well.
