Events of
the Week: Our theme was spring. We spent the week learning about how the
season affects plants, animals and people.
Math: We continued to practice
addition and subtraction within 10. Your
child should be able to complete a number bond and a number sentence without
assistance that illustrates a number story.
Please take the time to look over your child’s math worksheet every
evening to assure that they understand this important concept.
Language Workshop: This week we read two informational books
about spring. The students wrote about
key details they learned from the books.
We discussed the changes we are seeing outside. We learned about how the weather changes in
spring and how the behavior of animals and people change as well.
Writing
Workshop: We looked at
several spring pictures. We labeled the
pictures and wrote sentences about what was in each picture. We are working on adding detail to our
writing. We also reviewed opinion
writing. We wrote about our favorite
season and gave reasons to support our opinion.
Our sentence writing is getting better every day! Continue to practice writing sentences at
home.
Reading
Workshop: Students are
working daily in Literacy Centers. While
students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on
different reading skills. During
independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning
during small groups and using their reading strategies. I hope that you are able to see them using
these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
Word Study: We introduced sight words “said” and
“at”. We also worked with –op, -ot, and –og word families.

Reading
Challenge
Our
last reading challenge of the year is coming home today. Please take a few moments each night to read
with your child. It’s a wonderful
opportunity to spend quality time together, but more importantly, it sends the
message that reading and school are important.
Don’t forget: you can use the books from their book bags towards the challenge. The Reading Challenge is due Monday, May 21st. Happy Reading!
Next Week:

§ We will finish our unit in math on composing and
