Friday Note - 2/2/18

This Week:  We started off the week by celebrating the 100th day on Monday followed by the 101st day with a Dalmatian Celebration on Tuesday.  What a fun way to begin our week!

  • Math—We practiced counting to 100 (by ones, fives, and tens) for our 100th day celebration!  We learned to use a hundreds chart and worked on some fun 100 day activities!  We read several 100 day books during math.  On Wednesday, we began decomposing and composing addition stories with sums of 6, 7 and 8.

  • Language Workshop—We did some additional research on penguins.  We also enjoyed watching video clips of penguins.  We reviewed the list of facts about penguins that we wrote last week.  Using this knowledge, we then listed several things that penguins are, what they have, and things they can do.  The students then used this to write a 3-sentence report about penguins.

  • Writing Workshop—As a class, we used the penguin facts to write a short informational paper.  First, we organized our thoughts by filling out a writing template.  Then we used the template to write our informational paper.  This writing is coming home today.  Please be sure to look over your child’s research packet.  I’m sure he/she will have plenty more information to share with you!  Each child also wrote their own informational paper about what they learned about penguins.  These are hanging in the hallway.  If you are able to come to the Valentine Party, be sure to check out your child’s writing.
  • Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on specific reading skills and strategies.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
  • Word Study—We focused on segmenting and blending phoneme sounds this week.  We learned to pronounce the beginning, middle and ending of words and then blend them back together (ex. /j/ /e/ /t/ =jet).  Please work with your child on this skill at home.  I will assess over segmenting and blending next week.
