Friday Note - 2/16/18

NO SCHOOL MONDAY!

This Week:
  • Math: We began our unit on subtraction. Please take time to look over your child’s math page with them daily. This is a difficult concept for some kindergartners to master as they want to count the amount in each group rather than determining the difference between the groups.
  • Language Workshop: We read many different nursery rhymes. We made Jack and Jill and Hey Diddle Diddle books to add to our book boxes. We used retelling pieces while retelling the rhymes.
  • Writing Workshop: We continued working on expanding our writing. We are working on writing more than one sentence on the same topic. We also focused on turning boring sentences into exciting ones.
  • Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers. While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on specific reading skills and strategies. During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.
  • Word Study: Our sight word was “in”. We worked on building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words by focusing on the short a and short i sounds. On Tuesday and Wednesday our focus was on short a words. We worked on writing short a words by looking at a picture then used letter tiles to build the words on the first day. The next day we completed a worksheet independently. We did the same thing on Thursday and Friday with short i words. Your child is bringing home the short i letter tiles home today. Please complete the word building activity with your child.

Reading Journey
I hope you and your child are finding a special time each night to work on our reading journey. Remember, our goal is to complete twenty reading activities. This reading journey will end on March 8th. Reading logs need returned by March 8th in order for your child to “travel” to different kindergarten rooms during our read-a-thon on March 9th.

Next Week:
  • We will begin a unit on the Universe.
  • We will continue working on understanding subtraction.
  • Our sight word will be “of”.
  • We will continue building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and focus on short o and short e sounds.
  • We will introduce opinion writing.

Have a great weekend!!
Mrs. Vestal
