Friday Note - 2-23-18
This Week: Our theme was universe.
Thursday was Jump Rope for Heart. Thank you to all who donated to the
American Heart Association.
- Math: We
continued our unit on subtraction. We focused on decomposing using
manipulatives, drawings, and number bonds. We also introduced how to write
a subtraction number sentence. The students practiced all week using different
strategies to show their knowledge of solving a subtraction problem.
- Language
Workshop— We learned about the universe. We asked questions and read
books called Sun, Moon, Earth, and Stars. We
also watched videos on Brain Pop Jr. Then, we listed key details and new
vocabulary words from each book. The students really enjoyed
learning about this topic.
- Writing Workshop—We introduced
opinion writing. An opinion piece consists of three sentences (or
more). The first sentence states an opinion (I like inside recess.).
The next two (or more) sentences give reasons why. The students each
wrote an opinion piece about watching TV or playing outside.
- Reading Workshop—Students are
working daily in Literacy Centers. While students are working independently,
I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.
During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills
they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.
- Word Study— We focused on the -at
word family. Students participated in various activities where they had to
identify a picture and match it to the correct word. We also practiced
building words that have the -at ending (cat, bat, rat, mat, etc.).
Our sight word was “of”.

Friday Note - 2/16/18
NO SCHOOL MONDAY!
This Week:
- Math: We began our unit on subtraction. Please take time to look over your child’s math page with them daily. This is a difficult concept for some kindergartners to master as they want to count the amount in each group rather than determining the difference between the groups.
- Language Workshop: We read many different nursery rhymes. We made Jack and Jill and Hey Diddle Diddle books to add to our book boxes. We used retelling pieces while retelling the rhymes.
- Writing Workshop: We continued working on expanding our writing. We are working on writing more than one sentence on the same topic. We also focused on turning boring sentences into exciting ones.
- Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers. While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on specific reading skills and strategies. During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.
- Word Study: Our sight word was “in”. We worked on building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words by focusing on the short a and short i sounds. On Tuesday and Wednesday our focus was on short a words. We worked on writing short a words by looking at a picture then used letter tiles to build the words on the first day. The next day we completed a worksheet independently. We did the same thing on Thursday and Friday with short i words. Your child is bringing home the short i letter tiles home today. Please complete the word building activity with your child.

Friday Note - 2/2/18
This Week: We started off the week by celebrating the 100th day on Monday followed by the 101st day with a Dalmatian Celebration on Tuesday. What a fun way to begin our week!
- Math—We practiced counting to 100 (by ones, fives, and tens) for our 100th day celebration! We learned to use a hundreds chart and worked on some fun 100 day activities! We read several 100 day books during math. On Wednesday, we began decomposing and composing addition stories with sums of 6, 7 and 8.
- Language Workshop—We did some additional research on penguins. We also enjoyed watching video clips of penguins. We reviewed the list of facts about penguins that we wrote last week. Using this knowledge, we then listed several things that penguins are, what they have, and things they can do. The students then used this to write a 3-sentence report about penguins.
- Writing Workshop—As a class, we used the penguin facts to write a short informational paper. First, we organized our thoughts by filling out a writing template. Then we used the template to write our informational paper. This writing is coming home today. Please be sure to look over your child’s research packet. I’m sure he/she will have plenty more information to share with you! Each child also wrote their own informational paper about what they learned about penguins. These are hanging in the hallway. If you are able to come to the Valentine Party, be sure to check out your child’s writing.
- Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers. While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on specific reading skills and strategies. During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies. I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
- Word Study—We focused on segmenting and blending phoneme sounds this week. We learned to pronounce the beginning, middle and ending of words and then blend them back together (ex. /j/ /e/ /t/ =jet). Please work with your child on this skill at home. I will assess over segmenting and blending next week.
